Q: How do the United States and Thailand differ? What was the biggest adjustment you had to make?
A: Probably the driving—since the side of the road is different—and the weather; it can get extremely cold. Other than that, there wasn’t much to adjust to, as there’s plenty of Asian food, many Asian grocery stores, and a large Thai community.
Q: How often do you return to Thailand?
A: Since moving there, I’ve returned once a year. My workplace provides annual vacation days, which I use to come back to Thailand for a break.
Q: What are your plans for this house?
A: I’m building it so that whenever I return each year, I won’t have to stay in a hotel. While I sometimes stay with my sister or my mother, I really wanted a place of my own to come back to. My husband and I also plan to retire in Thailand eventually.
Q: Were you concerned about whether you could secure a home loan in Thailand while living abroad?
A: I was, actually. Back when I was still in Thailand, I told my mother I wanted a house, but I assumed it would be impossible to get a loan while working overseas—since I wouldn’t have local credit, a local job, or Thai payslips.
