Q. How long have you been living there?
A. I’ve been living there for 14 years. I got married and moved there, and I also work there. But for this loan application, I used my husband’s income for 100% of the loan amount.
Q. 🌴 Life in Hawaii and adjusting
A. I live in Hawaii. It’s quite similar to Thailand. The weather is good, and there’s a wide variety of food. Most of the people are Asian, including Japanese, Thai, and Laotians. So I felt like I didn’t need to adjust or find it too different from before.
Q. And what about language and making friends?
A. I speak a mix of Thai and English. There are also many Thai friends here, so it’s very relaxed.
Q. 🏠 Concerns and the process of obtaining a home loan in Thailand
A. Were you concerned about applying for a home loan in Thailand before?
A little bit, because we don’t have any income or bank statements in Thailand. We don’t have any salary statements in Thailand because we don’t work and don’t have a credit history here. So it was quite difficult at first.
Q. Have you ever researched or consulted with any other companies besides Sun Gateway before?
A. Never. But I knew that applying for a loan from abroad is quite difficult because we mainly live abroad. My sister (who lives in Italy) knew about Sun Gateway and was researching it as well, so I decided to give it a try.
Q. Regarding Sun Gateway’s service, was the process easy or difficult?
A. It wasn’t difficult at all. But because I had bought a house there before, the process might be different. My husband sometimes complains, “Why do they ask for so many documents?” (laughs) So I explained to him that it’s because we don’t have proof of income in Thailand. He couldn’t come to inspect us directly there, so the paperwork had to be more extensive than for the average person in Thailand, which he understood.
Q. The moment you found out the approval was confirmed.
A. I was at home at the time. As soon as I found out, I immediately told my husband that the loan had been approved. He was happy for me, but at first he was a little worried about traveling back to Thailand to sign the documents. So I consulted with the Sun Gateway team about whether it was necessary to fly back or if we could sign there, and how much longer it would take. Once we concluded that signing in Thailand would be faster, my husband was happy to fly back, asking that I give them about two weeks’ notice to prepare.
Q. Did you intend to buy this house for someone to live in, or do you plan to live there yourself?
A. We bought it for our children first, so that when we come back to Thailand we won’t have to spend money on hotel accommodations, because whenever I come back, I always stay for a long time. After calculating, the annual hotel expenses add up to hundreds of thousands of baht. It’s better to use that money to pay for your own house.
**Q. Finally, what advice would you like to give to Thais living abroad who want to own a home in Thailand like you, Ms. Chayamorn Stanko?**
**A. I would say, is it difficult? If your documents are complete and ready, it’s not difficult at all. Even though my case might not have involved a very high loan amount, if the documents are ready, the money is ready, and if you have the time to fly to Thailand to sign the documents in person, the process will be much faster. It’s also a great way to visit home at the same time.**
