Q: Are there differences between Denmark and Thailand? What did you have to adjust to the most?
A: The language and culture. You have to learn the language first to communicate with the locals. Denmark uses Danish as its primary language—not English—and it is completely different from English.
Q: How long did it take to learn enough to communicate?
A: If you don’t know English at all, learning Danish is actually easier because you focus solely on it; you can reach a communicative level in about 5–6 months—less than a year. However, if you already speak English, you tend to revert to English when you can’t find the right Danish words, which slows down the learning process.
Q: While living abroad, were you worried that getting a loan to buy a house or condo in Thailand would be difficult, or did you wonder if it was even possible?
A: I hadn’t really thought about that aspect at the time.
