Despite the concerns and obstacles involved in obtaining a lengthy work permit process, I was finally able to get it approved just in time for my vacation in Thailand. A: My name is Rittichai Srikhum. I am 30 years old and currently work as a chef in the Netherlands.
Q: How many years have you worked here, and how have you adapted?
A: I’m about to enter my third year. This is my first serious job after graduating. Before this, I did some Work and Travel programs. Adapting has been quite difficult, especially finding a job as a Thai person abroad and the language barrier. In Europe, you need supplementary languages like French, German, or Dutch. I had a basic understanding of English, but on my first day there, I had to enroll in a Dutch language course. I continued learning until I reached the required level before I could find a job. Currently, I use English with my colleagues in the kitchen. But if I talk to my boss or external delivery people, I use Dutch.
Q: I understand you bought a condo, right? Are you buying it to live in yourself in the future?
A: Yes, I bought a condo to live in myself. I intend to acquire an asset for myself in the future. I’ve been thinking for a long time whether it would be better to save cash, but I thought choosing a loan would be better.
Q: How did you find out about Sun Gateway?
A: Mostly online, such as on their website and in Facebook groups for Thais in Belgium and the Netherlands. At first, I was worried about scams, but after reading comments from Thais abroad who had used their services and asking them about the process, I felt it was trustworthy to a certain extent, so I decided to choose them. Q: Were you concerned about anything in the beginning?
A: I was worried about “documents.” Because we are abroad, some documents, such as the employment contract (Work Permit) or documents from the company I work for (which is a franchise system), take about 2-3 weeks to obtain through several intermediaries. And my employment contract is expiring in 1 year, so I have to reapply again. The process took quite a long time, and I almost got discouraged and considered saving up the money myself instead. But in the end, I persevered and got approved.
Q: How did you find out about the approval, and what are your travel plans?
A: I found out when I flew back to Thailand for my vacation. I had planned this since December of last year, booked my flight in January, and informed the officer that I wanted everything to be completed in time for my return to Thailand, as the condo would be finished then, and I wanted the transfer to be completed within 2 months. They were able to meet my expectations.
Q: What are the remaining steps, and have you visited the condo yet?
A: Only the “condo handover” remains. However, I won’t be there because I have to fly back to work next week (I’m on a 1-month vacation). It’s a shame about that. As for the actual condo, my family will be checking it out for me. I’ll probably only be able to visit again next year, as I only come back to Thailand once a year.
